Artist Statement I've been one of the luckiest people on earth, able to do photography for a living for over 40 years. My dad, Carl Thompson, was a photographer and he and I worked together for over 10 years in our commercial photography business. Dad loved his 8x10 camera and all the things associated with it. Plus he loved going into the darkroom and spending hours creating a masterpiece. Just imagine the results using an 8x10 negative to make an 8x10 contact print. He also was the absolute master of painting with light, something I never had the patience to learn. But to watch him do his ballet in front of the camera and never be seen on the film when the lens is capturing the exposure was truly an artist at work. Then he bought his first Hasselblad in the early sixties and the size of the camera and quality it produced blew his mind, after that the big camera got used less and less.

I miss him very much. But I had to move on and find my own way. I spend the next 30 years on my own, traveling the highway and byways of the world toting a 45 pound metal camera case to protect my two Hasselblads and all there lenses and accessories. I specialized in advertising illustration photography the next 10 to 15 years, even had a representative in New York, feeding me assignments. Then I fell in with a couple of friends and we started a film and video production company based in Tulsa. We specialized in 35mm film and 1" video production, catering to very large corporations and advertising agencies around the country. I appointed myself creative director but still did some still photography, moving more toward heavy industry and away from advertising illustration.

I'm retired now, but I've discovered I cannot escape the overwhelming urge to create. Looking back over the last 40 some years in photography, the driving force of getting up every morning was to approach every project with fresh open eyes and create something quit unique, the obvious was never enough. So here I am, creating in a new medium, digital photography and one of the wonders of the world......photoshop. My dad would have gone wild had he been able to play with these marvelous toys.
